Preston has dozens of buildings that used to be Pubs, so I would like your contributions of names & whereabouts of such buildings. Once compiled, I will hopefully go and take some photos of the said buildings and hopefully a few words on what type of pubs they were.

I'll start with a famous old pub, The Old England

This pub was renown for being a hard pub, or a hard mans pub. When I was a junior of the drinking scene, there was lots of stories going around about how pub regulars from various hard pubs, would go and visit other hard pubs to sort out differences between hard men who happened to have some sort of disagreement.

One famous occurrence was when travelers visited the Old England, the trouble that broke out was reported in the LEp, but this was before the internet, so no links to any articles I'm afraid.

Anyway, coming home from Beacon Fell today, we drove passed the Old England pub on Ribbleton Lane, I stopped to take this photo.

IPB Image

As you can see, it is derelict, boarded up and painted an odd colour. What will happen to this fine building I wonder?

Any input greatfully recieved.

I can remember a pub called the Boars Head, it was through a narrow doorway on friargate and had an upstairs which was a right rough place, spent some happy times there!

Also what was the name of the pub at the top of the road leading down to friargate from the covered market?

Something ' Bowl ', methinks???

Also the bar that was situated below the cinema down towards the railway station??

Anyone remember?

the pub you might be reffering to toro, was "the jolly farmer" at the top of orchard street, opposite to friagate.

remember the boarshead well, especially upstairs

and the other one, was "the painted wagon", beneath the abc cinema. use to go in there quite a bit, plenty of pool tables, but i never bothered on a tuesday night!!!!! ohmy.gif

I just caught up with this thread, wow, so many pub's, so little time. mad.gif
The pub you're trying to remember at the corner of Orchard Street, opposite the covered market, was a favorite haunt of the Teddy Boy's back in the mid fifties. It was The Farmers Arms. Now it may have changed names several time over the years, but as long as I remember it, it was The Farmers Arms. They didn't have a juke box in that place, what they did have was a rather plush record player and a pile of 78 rpm records stacked next to it, you could go up and pick your record and put it on yourself...the good old days.
I used to have a pint now and then in The Neptune. It's long gone now, but it was at the corner of Marsh Lane and Strand Road. What about the Birley Arms, opposite the old Plaza picture house, is that still standing ? And what about The Lamb as you entered Church Street from Stanley Street ? Another good old pub that is now vacant is The Windsor Arms, that's still standing, not to mention The Pickwick on Meadow Street, now student living quarters ??
What about the General Codrington and the New Hall Lane Tavern, and the Queen Adelaid, and the Carters Arms, not to mention the Rosebud, all on New Hall Lane. What about The Union, and The Unicorn, and the King Bill ?
Hey, you've got me going here.
Well Paul, there's a couple for you to photgraph for us ???

Hi Sammy, it will probably take me longer to look for the pub pics I've already taken, than it would do to go out and retake them specifically. However, I'm enjoying my brew and dinner is served soon, so I'll continue to sieve through my thousands of pics!

To get us on the way, the Queen Adelaide, a pub with lot's of potential, considering the new bingo hall and hotel would undoubtedly bring custom.

I'll upload the other pub pics once I find them.

Einstein's Theory on Moor Lane, now closed and regulary a subject to arson attacks I believe, but for the life of me I can't remember it's original name.

Anyone?

A little further down the road we have the Mitre Tavern, which is destined to be vets I think.

Cheers El Toro,

Some more now closed pubs, starting with the pub where I first joined a pool team.

Windsor Castle

Another pub that I played pool for, oh so many memories of this place, it was my local for a few years, 1995 to 2000.

And another Meadow street area pub, probably the busiest of the lot during the height of the Meadow St Sunday night out. Shame or what eh? The Sunday night out moved to Plungy, now Plungy is dead. Where's the place now for a Sunday night?

Anyway, the Stevie's, or, The Stephensons Arm

Paul; I know I live a long way from Preston, but I'm pretty sure that the photo o0f the Windsor Castle, and the Red Rose Inn, are one and the same building ?? The last time I was in the Red Rose was just a couple of years ago and it was being run by two homosexual chaps. My sister lives just a couple of blocks from there and when I'm back in Preston, I usually stay at her flat and frequent the pubs in that area such as the Army & Navy, The Prince Consort, The New Fleece, and the Stone Cottage, all very posh pubs eh ? Hee, hee, rolleyes.gif
Last November I was over there andtook a walk through Avenham and Miller Parks, I was disappointed to find The Continental shuttered up, and at the other end of the walk, and also shuttered up was The Shawes Arms. No wonder the pubs are crowded in the city center, there's no bloody pubs left open anywhere else. mad.gif mad.gif

Sammy, I remember the Shawes Arms very well, I lived over the bridge in Walton-le-Dale almost next to the Bridge Inn, at that time pubs in town closed at 10.00 and in the county at 10.30, last call at the Shawes and everybody would pile out and over the bridge for another couple of pints.
There used to be a pub on Lancaster Rd across from the covered market called the Market Inn and further down Lancs Rd going north there was another pub that had a bunch of statutes on the roof at the front of the building, anyone remember that one?
My aunt used to be the landlady of the Old Brittania on Fishergate, I would imagine thats gone by now, further up was the Sun, and the Dog and Partridge, and there used to be a little club around there where you could go and drink in the afternoon between 3.00 and 5.30 when the pubs were closed!!
I remember some of the pubs around the Ribble bus station and Church St there were some hard cases in those places.
Can't remember the names of places any more, it's been so long since I was over there.

Cheers!!!

An old mate of mine i met again a few years back ( Frankie Dewhurst ) now owns the old ' Neptune ', that was a place us youngsters avoided in the 70's, it was taboo place to go.

Wasn't there a 'Carribean ' club somewhere. I know exactly where but would never remember the names of the streets. Opposite the the bus station going towards fulwood, 500 meters on the right hand side there used to be a SOMETHING BOOKS company, and behind that, there was a community hall with a bar and we used to sometimes sneak in on a concert night..................Wow! Real halcyon days!!

Cheers!!!

Often referred to as the Hand on Twat, the pub was on the corner of Lancaster Rd. and Saul St.
The Port Admiral was so very handy for a pint when the Queens Hall, (Saul St. Baths), had the likes of the John Barry Seven, and the Ray Ellington bands there.
I think the Market Inn is still there, it wasn't on Lancaster Rd. it's at the other end of the market, on the corner of Orchard St. The pub on Lancsaster Rd, opposite the market is still there too, the Black-a-Moor Head.
There were a couple of pubs up the old Ribble passage way of Lancaster Rd. was it the Ribble ?? and also the Derby Arms, which actually was on Derby St. but the back door was on the Ribble passage way.

only ever went in the neptune about once a year, christmas eve, a few of us would bog off from work at dinner time (BAC wellfeild rd) neptune one of the first stops, always heaving on this day, then make our way around some of the other dives around marsh lane, before they shut at 3 pm!!!

the book company you must be on about toro, must be "askews books", on north road, and yes turn right down to st pauls rd,followed by aleft, and next to the bridge, near miley railway tunnel, was some sort of community hall,i always knew this as "the deaf centre"if my memory serves me right, not a carribean club, that was down on kent street, near the "duke of edinburgh, and windsor " pubs.went to a few do's here myself(the deaf centre),i am sure it is still there, but i dont know what purpose it currently serves, next time i am down that way,i will make a point of checking it out,and report back here
