From the LA Times....

The term 'Negro'? Color it obsolete
When a website pointed out that 'Negro' was going to appear once more on the 2010 census, many blacks reacted with shock and distaste. They see it as a relic of the bad old days of segregation.....

The last census here was three years ago I believe, it asked whether you was 'Caucasian' Afro-Canadian' 'Aboriginal' or other (please specify).
This month is 'Black Heritage Month' where we are supposed to celebrate the history of the blacks in Nova Scotia, this history goes back to the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the American Civil War, when they were either dumped on these shores or arrived as runaway slaves on the underground railway.
However calling themselves 'Afro-Canadian' or 'Afro-American' is a form of self segregation, we're not part of your white society, but if we don't get a job we'll pull out the 'race card' and call out racial discrimination. This used to happen to me all the time, you'd give a guy a job he didn't like, and he'd tell you he was 'color coded' thats when the government put in their affirmative action plan for visible minorities, and I got out sad.gif

Every time you come back here, you're celebrating your Preston heritage - you're Preston-Canadian Bluenoser.

I believe Anglo-American is the term used here for us Brits.
Native American is the new term for Red Indians as they were known to us kids from the Saturday afternoon matinee.

Native American is not that new, it was introduced in the 1960s and now is being superceded by "American Indian".

Yes Blue, the few I know prefare Native American and I can see why, the term Indian was mistakenly given to them by non other than CC who is despised by the Mexicans.

I always thought it was 'Limeys', here I'm just a Canadian with a funny accent laugh.gif And as the saying goes 'British by birth, Lancastrian by the grace of god and Canadian by choice'

On our last census form I discovered that I was an 'OTHER' There were boxes to tick for NZ Maori, NZ European, Pacific Islander, Chinese, Thai, etc etc and 'OTHER.' So I ticked 'OTHER' having no other choice. I did write in the margin that I was British despite their not having acknowledged my existence. There was quite a bit of backlash in the papers and angry letters to The Editor from many other 'OTHERS' laugh.gif

I usually class myself as 'Human Being', though some have debated this...

No Stevil. We have never taken out NZ citizenship. Whilst we are permanent NZ residents with all rights and privileges we are not New Zealanders. I have always thought it ludicrous that New Zealanders are referred to as NZ European. Sure they all originated from Europe but we are in the South Pacific for goodness sake and there are now five generation families living here.
We have one daughter who is now a naturalised kiwi because she didn't want to be the odd one out in her family. My son-in-law and grandchildren were born here and call us Poms. Our other daughter like us has never bothered to make the change. One reason being it costs about $1,000 to do it.

Oh I didn't realise the question was about your nationality not ethnic origin. Personally I have problems calling myself British as I don't think of it as a nationality more a political concept. If pushed I put English although really I identify as a Mancunian if anything. wink.gif
