I noticed this on another forum, and thought it looked interesting:

Upside down tomatoes

Anyone tried this? And what do you think the benefits would be? smile.gif

No I haven't tried this ES in fact I have never heard of this method. Guess what I will be doing tomorrow!!! I have several buckets that I was going to put out in the inorganic collection but now will be put to good use.

Thank you so much for that ES. I will let you know how I get on.

Having said all that you should see the tomatoes out there in my garden. I could supply the local vegetable shop. However with upside down hanging plants I could free up quite a bit of space for other stuff.

PS Living downunder as I do in NZ it should work very well. laugh.gif

This method of tomato growing is quite common here in southern California. I haven't tried it but we see a lot of it on the porches of houses around the golf courses we play. Many of these houses only have a very small garden and a porch, or patio, the golf course being their 'garden'. The big advantage to this type of planting is that you can get quite a few plants hanging in a somewhat restricted area. From what I have seen, the results see very good.

We do it here in season and it works quite well. You don't get any of the ground based pests. We do peppers and strawberries as well.

Haha very good - I like it Irene. laugh.gif

Last year lots of our peas and beans were eaten by slugs, so this method might work well for them and keep them away from the pests. I can't wait to get planting. This time of year is very frustrating! rolleyes.gif

No deer here dear. Well not in Auckland. Possums are our only threat and I don't think they care much for tomatoes. My apples, plums and pears are more likely targets. Little buggers!!!!

Update! Now four flowers and the first two have turned into two little tomatoes already. That's not bad for 15days.

This year I am going for low maintenance in my garden. Now I am beginning to get very interested in growing a few tomatoes using the upside down method.

No doubt this will cause a major stir in the village and my sanity will be scrutinised. However I am sure it will be a first for the locality and may well take on.

Tad.
