And there lies the problem, for no matter what any money is spent on there will always be the people that will think it woould have been better spent elswhere. the solution then would seem to be..Never spend any money on anything ever again.

2.5 million is a lot of money and IMHO could be better spent elsewhere, the list of where it could be spent is endless.

i see little point is such an ornament. if someone has 2.5 million quid burning a hole in their pocket, and wants to provide a suitable memorial to the town, then there are plenty of prestons existing landmarks that would welcone the money to improve or modernise them. prestons history as an aircraft builder isnt really that great, after all, bae had a plant in preston that it valued so much that it sold it and allowed its demolition. salmesbury is in south ribble, and warton is on the fylde. what really made preston as a town want planes, or even trains. it was cotton. so if you want to build a memorial to the towns proud history, then make huge sculpture of a mill chimney. none of the other industries, planed, trains even the docks would have existed if it were not for the cotton industry.
from my personal point of view, ive no objection to any individual building a huge monument by the m6, my objection is when people expect me as a tax payer to fund it when so much else in the current climate is being cut back.

A poll in the Longridge and Ribble Valley news is currently opposing the sculpture, 94% to 6%.

I found a website with a render of what the sculpture may actually look like, it's like a massive paper dart
read more here: http://riversstream.blogspot.com/2010/02/p...paper-dart.html
UPDATE: apparently this site is a few years old and is unlikely to be the actual design for the currently proposed sculpture.

As Preston and its environs was a pioneering centre for the production of tramcars and buses, why not a giant figure of a bus conductor. There could be a competition for a caption, such as ‘no more room on top’ or ‘anymore fares please’.
Or perhaps, No Smoking - No Spitting, which were both prominently displayed downstairs ?

The 'Green Giant' idea looks a million times better than the 'Angel of Death'

Sorry River but your 'Jolly Green Giant' looks exactly like a bloody big green beaver, the shape of the body and the tail behind it. And how this represents the battle of Preston is beyond me
p.s. Don't you think that there are enough distractions on the highways without having great big sculptures on the side of the road, in this Province they would be illegal on any major highway.
